Natural Language Processing (NLP) refers to a subfield of Computer Science which is concerned with allowing machines to communicate (i.e. understand and produce) in human language, as opposed to machine language. A synonym for Natural Language Processing is Human Language Technology, or HLT. The term HLT is increasing in use within the Intelligence Community and the Department of Defense.
